25 – Epilogue

We always want what we can never have

We only want what we see

Our hearts will never meet

Together we will never be

I may love you

However, you will never know

I will never tell you

I just have to watch you go

&nbsp

Although you are part of my life

I will never be part of yours

To me, you are my world, my every heartbeat and thought

To you, I am no one and nothing more.

Gina finished taping up the last box of items that used to adorn her apartment. She found it funny that such precious memories could be hidden and perhaps forgotten by some cardboard and duct tape. Gina was sorry to be leaving, especially with how fucked up Fenny was. She’d found it impossible to leave, but Fenny had ordered her to and promised profusely that she’d be fine. She was thankful not to have run into Greg as well. She’d thought about it – actually she’d thought about little else. Gina knew if she met with Greg again that she wouldn’t be getting on that plane home. They’d probably spend the night screwing each other’s brains out in a hotel and then move to some hick town and get a dog. Greg would grow his hair and she’d get his name tattooed on her ankle.

Gina was laughing at her own stupid thoughts when there was a knock at the door. She froze, and let the million thoughts running through her mind descend into one: “I hope it’s him.” She slowly got to her feet and strolled across the now empty lounge room. Gina unlocked the door and was surprised to find no one there. She looked blankly down the corridor and then something caught her attention. Hanging on the door handle was a brightly coloured gift bag. She unhooked the bag and read the gift tag, “Here’s something to put amongst all those giraffes.” Still confused, Gina opened the bag and felt herself tingle.

Fenny walked into work carrying a large envelope and glanced around, pleased to see Sully was too busy to notice her.

“Hi Fenny, have you come to see…” the receptionist began, before Fenny cut her off.

“Can you give this to Sully for me? Thanks,” Fenny replied, then turned and left. As she disappeared from view, Sully appeared, looking furious.

“Was that Fenny?” he scorned.

“Yes sir, she told me to give you this,” the receptionist replied meekly and handed Sully the envelope.

Sully looked at her strangely and tore the envelope open. Inside were the last pieces of work he had asked for and a letter.

Dear Sully,

Here is the work you have requested recently, I’m sorry it has taken me so long, but at lot has happened that I simply don’t have the strength to tell you. I hope everything is how you wanted it.

There is another reason for my writing of this letter. It is also my formal resignation. I know I have not been the best worker recently. I have let my personal life take over. Unfortunately, it’s still taking over, and I feel it is time I moved on and made a fresh start – I also really, really need a vacation..

I’ve explained everything to Mom and Dad, so for further details of my fucked up life, ask them (you know they’ll tell you everything anyway).

Take care and I’ll see you soon,

Love, Fenny

Fenny walked away from her former place of employment feeling almost empowered. She was a free spirit now: no job, no boyfriend, and no weekly income. She only had two more things left to do now, pop to the travel agent to book that all-important trip, and burn the letter that had arrived from Brad that morning.

Gina arrived at the airport, checked herself in, and then bought a couple of magazines to relieve the boredom of the impending flight. She pondered some duty free shopping and then realized she must be miserable; there was no other reason to want to shop an hour before getting on a flight. Still it was better than doing nothing, so Gina began perusing the perfume.

“You don’t need it, smells like shit anyway,” a voice announced.

“FENNY,” Gina gasped.

“No, your fairy godmother,” Fenny sarced.

“What on earth are you doing here?” Gina asked.

“Oh you know, I like hanging out at airports,” Fenny mused.

“Seriously?” Gina scorned.

“I’m coming with you,” Fenny grinned.

“No way,” Gina gasped.

“Yes way. Even scammed the seat next to you,” Fenny perked.

“Oh my god,” Gina squeaked and flung her arms around Fenny.

Fenny cracked up. “Calm down.”

“This is gonna be so cool,” Gina beamed. “Hold on, what about your job?”

“Quit it,” Fenny replied.

“Wow, bet Sully was pissed,” Gina mused.

“I don’t know, didn’t hang around to find out,” Fenny said sheepishly.

“FLIGHT QFA720 TO SYDNEY NOW BOARDING,” suddenly blared over the loud speaker.

“You ready to go down under?” Gina asked.

“Hell yeah,” Fenny replied.

After they’d taken off, Gina reached into her hand luggage and pulled something out. Fenny looked over and shook her head.

“An ocelot, huh?” she mused.

“Yeah, I found it hanging on my front door,” Gina nodded.

“That is so sappy,” Fenny chided.

“Shut up,” Gina grumbled and grabbed a magazine.

“Oh nononono,” Fenny suddenly groaned and covered her face.

“What?” Gina asked, looking over at Fenny. Fenny pointed at the movie screen, and there were Brad and Greg. It figured: they were showing Whose Line is it Anyway?

“Please tell me you are only showing one episode,” Fenny half-begged a passing stewardess.

“No, sorry, we’re having a marathon.”

Fenny and Gina let out a unified scream of “NO” and then descended into laughter.

Brad waved goodbye to Ritza as she headed out for the evening with some friends. As the door closed, he grabbed one of the cushions off the couch and pulled out the letter he’d stuffed into its cover. He’d sneakily logged on to Ritza’s email and read some of the letters. The one he was holding was a gem though. Through the countless paragraphs of dribble, there was one sentence that stood out…

“Marco, there’s something else I need to tell you, I’m pregnant and it’s yours.”
