11 – The Morning After

Greg, Wayne, Chip, Colin, Ryan and Brad sat around a large table in the hotel’s restaurant wolfing down their breakfast.

“Man, food never tasted so good,” Wayne chirped.

Everyone agreed in unison.

“So where’s Drew this morning?” Chip asked, looking at Ryan.

“How the hell should I know?” Ryan shrugged, shoving some bacon into his mouth.

“He went back down after we all went up…maybe he’s sleeping off a hangover,” Greg suggested.

They didn’t have to wait long until Drew came swaggering up to the table and pulled up a chair.

“Good morning everyone,” he beamed.

“How come you’re so happy?” Ryan asked.

“Hey, I’m in Australia, it’s a beautiful day and I’m with my best buddies…how can I not smile?” Drew gushed.

“He got laid,” Brad piped up.

“Oh Brad, you didn’t,” Greg gasped in mock horror.

“Don’t be disgusting,” Brad cringed. “I saw him leering over some girl in the elevator.”

“Ew, they did it in the elevator,” Colin groaned.

“I was never leering,” Drew grumbled, “and we didn’t do it in the elevator.”

“Oh man, you really did get laid,” Ryan gasped, suddenly going off his breakfast.

“It wasn’t like that,” Drew grumbled, pretending to be interested in the menu.

“What was her name?” Wayne queried.

Everyone looked at Drew.

He opened and closed his mouth a few times then just shrugged.

There were various amounts of tutting and disgusted looks.

To lighten the mood, Colin decided it was time to let everyone in on what he’d found out. He cleared his throat. “Everyone…I did some digging around last night if you’re interested.”

Everyone focused their attention on Colin.

“Ok…well I found out that we apparently arrived here by train from Melbourne, the bell boy insists we all came in whining about how we had to walk from the train station. Then I chatted to another member of staff who told me that Drew spent the whole time surrounded by women, who she reckoned were prostitutes.”

Drew looked horrified. “Oh yeah, like that’s ever happened…”

Everyone looked at Drew.

“Ok there was that one time,” Drew mumbled.

“Maybe there’s a connection to that phone of yours?” Wayne suggested.

“No way, I’ve never even turned it on,” Drew stated.

“Doesn’t mean you haven’t before,” Greg mused.

“Colin, is there anything else you found out?” Chip asked.

“Yes, I got hold of an atlas. Maslins should only be a couple of hours drive from here. I think we should rent some transport and check it out,” Colin enthused.

Everyone agreed and after breakfast, they first headed into the mall to buy a change of clothes. It was daggy Hawaiian shirts and long shorts all round.

Back at the hotel, Wayne was nominated to organise some transport while Brad and Chip decided to stand out on the balcony and yell at passersby. Greg, Colin and Ryan studied the atlas a bit more but eventually fell into just picking out rude place names.

Drew went back to his room and picked up the small purple phone. He switched it on and it asked for a password. He put in the year he was born and the phone sprang into life. Messages began pouring in, and when they eventually stopped, Drew read over some of them. He only needed a few to get the idea.

Drew decided to leave the phone on but placed it in the bedside drawer.

He let out a deep breath and decided he wouldn’t tell the others yet. Besides, how do you tell your friends you’re now Ritz Crispin, drug baron and pimp?
